America Recycles Day — November 15

Each year on November 15, communities across the country celebrate America Recycles Day, a national initiative dedicated to promoting the importance of recycling and waste reduction. This day serves as a reminder that even small efforts — like recycling a plastic bottle or reusing a shopping bag — can have a powerful impact on the environment.

Recycling helps conserve natural resources, saves energy, reduces landfill waste, and cuts greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generate over 290 million tons of municipal solid waste each year, and only about a third of that is recycled or composted. America Recycles Day challenges each of us to do better — and to inspire others to join in.

One of the simplest ways to participate is by taking the “#BeRecycled” pledge, a national commitment to reduce, reuse, and recycle responsibly. The pledge encourages individuals to learn what materials are accepted in their local recycling programs, buy products made with recycled content, and spread awareness about recycling in their communities.

This is also a great time to check your recycling habits at home. Are you rinsing containers before placing them in the bin? Avoiding “wish-cycling” (putting non-recyclable items in hopes they’ll get recycled)? Recycling rules vary by community, so a quick review of local guidelines can make a big difference in preventing contamination that often leads to otherwise recyclable materials ending up in landfills.

Beyond the blue bin, there are many creative ways to support sustainability. Donate gently used clothing and electronics. Compost food scraps and yard waste. Choose reusable bottles, mugs, and grocery bags instead of single-use plastics. Encourage your workplace, school, or neighborhood to host a recycling or clean-up event in honor of the day. When we each take responsibility for the waste we create, we help protect natural ecosystems, conserve resources, and leave a healthier planet for future generations. America Recycles Day reminds us that progress doesn’t come from one big action — it comes from millions of small choices made every day.

So, on November 15, take a moment to think before you toss. Recycle right, reuse creatively, and commit to a cleaner, greener America — because every item you recycle really does make a difference.
